📌 Good to know
Does it apply retroactively?
Yes — Kindergeld can be paid retroactively for up to 6 months before the month your application arrives. Apply as soon as you're settled.
Child born in Germany?
Apply right after birth with the birth certificate and the child's tax ID (arrives by post automatically). Also look into Elterngeld (parental allowance, ~65% of net income for 12–14 months) — a separate, bigger benefit.
Students & job-seekers
Pure student permits and Chancenkarte job-seeker permits generally don't qualify; once you switch to a work-based permit you usually do.
What do I need to apply?
Application form (online at arbeitsagentur.de), your tax ID and the child's tax ID, birth certificate, residence permit copies, and your IBAN. Processing takes a few weeks to a few months.
ℹ️ Estimate only. Amounts and eligibility rules change with legislation; the Familienkasse's written decision is authoritative. Kindergeld is separate from the tax child allowance (Kinderfreibetrag) — the tax office automatically applies whichever benefits you more.
